Split one column into several columns

Text to Columns works until the data isn’t perfectly regular: one address has a suite number, another a comma less, and everything shifts one column to the right.

Here a column is split only when its pattern is unambiguous. An address column becomes Street, City, State and ZIP code, and an account path such as Assets:Current Assets:Checking keeps the account name with the full path in its own column. “Last, First” names and one column per account level are offered as one-click splits. Values that don’t fit the pattern stay whole in the first column and are flagged, so nothing lands in the wrong place.

Example: before and after

The Address column became Street, City, State and ZIP code; the ZIP stays text, so leading zeros would survive.

How to do it

  1. 1Drop the file.
  2. 2Clear splits are applied; others appear as suggestions you can switch on.
  3. 3Download — every split column keeps a sensible name.

Questions

Which columns are split automatically?
Address columns where at least 95% of values match one clear pattern, and account paths (name plus full path). Names, and one column per account level, are suggestions that stay off until you turn them on.
What if some rows don’t match?
Those values stay complete in the first new column and the cell is flagged, so you can see exactly which rows need a look.
Can I split on my own separator?
Yes — type it in the command box (for example “split Category on /”), preview the result and apply it as a new step. A command uses one AI page.
