Clean an accounting export

Exports from QuickBooks, Xero and similar tools are reports first: a title and a date range on top, accounts written as paths like Assets:Current Assets:Checking, sections and subtotals, and a total that has to balance.

The report title is set aside, account paths are split into the account name and its full path, totals are taken out of the data and checked — debits against credits included — and amounts become numbers. The result is one flat table you can pivot, filter or import.

Example: before and after

“Assets:Current Assets:Checking” became the account “Checking” with its full path in Account path; the Total row was checked and both columns balance.

How to do it

Questions

Which accounting tools do you support?
Any that export to Excel, CSV or PDF. The layout is detected from the file rather than from a list of products, and remembered for the next export.
What happens to account hierarchies?
The account keeps its own name, and the full path goes into a separate column joined with “ > ”. Splitting the path into one column per level is a suggestion you can switch on.
Are derived lines like Gross Profit checked as sums?
No. Gross Profit, Net Income and similar lines are differences, not sums of the rows above, so they are removed from the data but not checked as totals.
